Established in 1970, the Department of Physical Education and Sports at Barkatullah University, Bhopal, has evolved as a pioneering centre for sports education and excellence. Originally started as one of the university’s first facilities supported by UGC, the department has significantly contributed to promoting physical education through academic programs, training, coaching, and research. The department offers undergraduate (B.P.E.S., B.P.Ed.), postgraduate (M.P.Ed.), and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs, recognized by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE). With over 60 acres of modern infrastructure including well-equipped laboratories, gymnasium, adventure sports facilities, and multiple outdoor and indoor sports grounds, it provides holistic training in diverse disciplines such as hockey, athletics, boxing, swimming, and adventure sports.
The department has produced numerous national and international players and organized various intercollegiate and inter-university tournaments. Its faculty and research centre have guided several Ph.D. scholars, with a notable record of NET/JRF achievers. Alumni and students have earned medals and represented India in prestigious events like the Asian Games and the Olympics. The department’s future plans align with the National Education Policy 2020, aiming to integrate sports into mainstream education and establish an NCC unit to support students aspiring for careers in defense and police services. Barkatullah University remains committed to fostering sports excellence and professional opportunities for its students.
